HAPPY INDEPENDENCE NIGERIA

My beloved country Nigeria is 51 today!!!It should be a day of celebration but is there truly any reason to celebrate?

Does the girl with the national flag look happy? NO !!! Well, this young girl too may have her reason. But please don't ask me what it is because I don''t have an answer.

Somebody just asked me if Nigeria is still crawling, learning to walk or on her feet already because a lot of things are just still not in place. Starting with education, electricity, transportation  down to security.

However, as a Nigerian, I will always pray for the peace and growth of my country.

Happy celebration, Happy independence.

GRUESOME: Abuja lady slaughtered by fiance

•Yakubu arrested over death of Victoria and Victoria Akubo before her death.

The Criminal Investigation Department, CID of Nassarawa State Police Command, Lafia is questioning Johnson Yakubu, a taxi driver who plies his trade in Abuja on the murder of his fiancee.

The body of the deceased, 29-year-old Victoria Akubo, was discovered by the son to the couple’s landlord on Friday afternoon.

Explaining the circumstances in which the body was discovered, sources in the deceased residence at Catholic Church Road, One Man Village, a suburb of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, told P.M.NEWS that the taxi driver who had left home earlier in the day called the landlord’s son to help check on his fiancee since he has been trying unsuccessfully to get her on phone.

The landlord’s son who also spoke to P.M.NEWS said he subsequently went to knock the door of the couple’s flat, but he did not get any response.

The landlord’s son said he subsequently called Johnson back to inform him that there was nobody at their home.

But the taxi driver was said to have insisted that his wife is inside the house.

He asked the landlord’s son to check inside the house through the other door that leads into the couple’s flat at the back.

Following Johnson’s instructions, the landlord’s son told P.M.NEWS that he went to peep in through the window and saw the body of Victoria lying on the bed with her face covered with a pillow.

He said he entered the flat and discovered that the Victoria was dead with two marks indicating that she was stabbed in two places. The landlord’s son said he consequently reported to the police. P.M.NEWS confirmed that the incident was reported at the local police station before the case was transferred to Lafia on Monday this week. It was gathered that Johnson, in his statement, tried to deny responsibility for the murder.

But the claim is being faulted by Victoria’s family.

It was learnt that Johnson had initially told the police that he left home around 8 am that day, but changed his statement later when he gathered that Mama Reuben had called Victoria around 6:12 am, indicating that the deceased was still alive as at then.

The same Mama Reuben told the police that she later went to see Victoria at their home around 7:30 am, but left after she repeatedly knocked the door without getting any response.

P.M.NEWS investigations also revealed that though Victoria and Johnson did their traditional marriage introduction ceremony preparatory to their wedding about two months ago, the deceased’s family did not approve of the marriage.

Also, neighbours of the couple at their former residence told P.M.NEWS that Johnson, an Igala from Kogi State, like his wife, is in the habit of beating and maltreating his wife to be.

Victoria, it was learnt, was admitted in hospital for some weeks recently as a result of such beating.

A younger sister of the deceased who was living with the couple claimed to have left in protest of the domestic abuse of Victoria.

Solomon Akubo, an elder brother of the deceased, said the family wants justice to be done on the issue even as he alleged that the police are trying to sweep the matter under the carpet.

I’m a love doctor in need of your advice

Gring, gring, “Hello, this is your home girl Sharon, your love doctor. How may I help you this evening?” I asked. “Is this Sharon the love doctor? Please, I need your advice on … my boyfriend.

He is a good kisser but …, I love my girlfriend but …, my husband is super in bed but …, my wife is beautiful and well-mannered but … and I am in love with a woman/man but … and so on. Please I need your honest advice.” This is all I hear thrice a week at the other end of the phone in my 30 minutes programme which I anchor. I feel so good and fulfilled when I’m able to advise and proffer solutions to my numerous callers and fans on their relationship and marital problems. It gladdens my heart when I get responses that they have been able to resolve their differences and get back together. As a love doctor, I thought I had it going well for me in my relationship with Gilbert, ‘my boyfriend’.

This is my story. Gilbert and I have been friends for the past four years. We met at a cyber café where incidentally we were both applying for jobs online. We sat close to each other and it happened that we were both applying for the same position in an advertising and public relations company. We started a tête-à-tête and from there, we became friends. We kept in touch and three weeks later, we were among those called for interview. I did not pass the interview but he did. He kept encouraging me not to relent in my search for a job. About three months later, I was opportune to freelance for a print medium, but I preferred to work in a radio or television station (broadcast) presenting a programme.

Luckily, that opportunity came sooner than expected - a job with a radio station and came up with the idea of presenting a relationship programme I called, “Talk with the love doctor.” Gilbert and I are always too busy but we try to find time to spend with each other at weekends. It was either we go to the cinema, events or eat out. We will talk about everything and catch up on the days we were apart, and some times he gives me idea on topics for discussion for my programme which I greatly appreciate.

One thing I am sure of is that he never misses my programme even when he is at work. I always had the urge to ask him about us but somehow, I could not. I have always told people on my programme to define their relationships but I guess I did not do that in mine. I could remember in one of my programmes where about four men called just to ask me out on a lunch date. I told them I don’t have lunch with my fans, but when they insisted, I asked them to call me after the programme. My God, after the programme, Gilbert called me and said, “How could you accept to go on a lunch date with your fans?” I explained that I told them so that they don’t eat into my time.

“Gilbert, I didn’t want them to eat into my programme time. If you must know, they don’t have my number, so they can’t call my direct number.” He then calmed down. With this, I thought I had a clear answer about us. It totally allayed my doubts and I thanked God that we are on the same page. In the almost five years we have been together, I have never seen or hear him talk about another woman and he too has never seen or hear me talk about another woman.

When he wanted to get his apartment, he asked me which area I would love to live and I said Ikeja. He got a three-bedroom apartment there and asked me to decorate and furnish it to my taste. I was really happy to hear him tell me this, “Sharon you are the woman here, decorate and furnish the house to your taste. I will give you enough money to do this.”

In less than three weeks, everything was in place. From the sitting room to the kitchen were tastefully decorated. I thought with the apartment ready, he would soon propose so we can start our wedding plans. Three months later, Gilbert told me something that totally shattered my emotions: “Sharon, I just want to say a big thank you for being a very good friend over the years.

You will always be special and dear to me but you see my fiancée is coming back into the country in two weeks from today so that we can start planning our wedding. When she comes, I would want you to be friends with her. Would you do that for me?” I was astonished. “Did I hear you say fiancée? What have I been to you all these years?” I enquired in tears.

“Sharon, I never asked you out. I see you as a very intelligent and special woman. Have you ever asked yourself why we have never kissed nor slept together? It was because I never wanted to cheat on my woman.” He told me. “So why didn’t you tell me you had a fiancée for almost five years that we have been together?” I asked. He told me I never asked him because I assumed we were dating. I was devastated. Gilbert told me God would bring a good man my way and very soon too. I just picked up my handbag and left.

I have not seen him ever since that day although he has been calling my phone. But I have refused to pick his call. I hear his fiancée is in the country and their wedding plans are in top gear. It is like a movie to me. I have chased away many potential husbands because of Gilbert. How and where do I start from at age 30? Please, the love doctor needs your advice.

‘Nigerian women don’t recognise their importance’ - Dr. Ndok

For eloquent Ebiti Onoyom Ndok, the Chairperson of the United National Party for Development (UNPD) and the only female leader of a political party in the country, no woman can climb up the political ladder on her own. She told  us in this interview that women need to join hands if they must occupy a good leadership position come 2015.

Who is Dr Ndok?
My name is Chief Dr. Ebiti Onoyom Ndok. I am from Cross River State and I am the chairperson for the United National Party for Development UNPD). I also doubled up as the presidential candidate in the last election.

How was the experience?
Waoh, being a woman, where do I start from? First of all, we had logistics problem which was why we were not able to campaign all over the country. Also, I contested on a very new platform, a new political party but we thank God for the opportunity we had to showcase because I was able to participate in the debate.

How was it for you coming out for the post of a presidential candidate as a woman?
Funny enough I had no problems. I believe the only problem we had was financial. If the money that the incumbent president had was able to go round the country to showcase the manifesto of the United National Party for Development, I believe we will be in Aso Rock by now because we are talking about socialist ideology, welfare of the people and basic needs for Nigerians. Nigerians are entitled to better life. What are we having now is nothing, purely zero. Every Nigerian is a local government on his own, you provide your light, food and all. I mean there is pure suffering in this country.
We believe UNPD can change that but we had no money to be able to go round. But presently, we are re-strategising to educate Nigerians of our policies and programmes. Yes, we start now, we are  strategising for 2015.

What would you say was the major challenge as a woman?
Well, as I said, not many knew me. And I believe if I was out more often, I would have gotten enough support from women as at that time. So, that is why we want to start early to be out. I have to be out there more often and let women know that they have a strong representative, a strong and intelligent one.

What are some of your antecedents?
I lived in the United Kingdom for 22 years. I am a trained lawyer, a diplomat. I had a Master’s degree in International Relations and I have done a lot of work on women issues in England. I headed an organisation called Organisation for the Welfare of the African Women in the UK. So all my life I have been fighting women causes. And when I came to Nigeria in 2005, I saw that the whole situation scenario is still the same. I went around to other political parties and see if I could work with them but their policies, programmes and manifestos didn’t suit what I was looking for, so I gathered people around and we registered the UNPD.
Apart from being the chairperson of UNPD, I am the president of Nigerian Women Solidarity, a women organisation here in Nigeria. I am also a publisher.

What do you publish?
Well, I have Christian books that I have published. I have a book on local government that is coming out very soon.

What would you find in this book for local governments?
It contains the administration of local government to its contribution to the development of Nigeria because I believe that the development of this country should be taken to the grassroots. So, we need to empower more local government chairmen to develop this country.

Is it empowerment they need or redirection?
They need redirection but, you see, they need to be empowered diligently, guiding them and restructuring. So you need to empower them intelligently, you talk to them, you guide them. The extra mile that is guidance, performance measurement, you need to begin to put the right things in place.

Where does this trait of your activism come from?
I think I just was born. I’m a gift to Nigeria. My name is Ebiti and it means gift. I have been a fighter right from my mother’s womb, I believe. I contested for chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) when I was 25 years old in Ondo State. I did not win because of the usual men thing. I was a staff of NTA, Akure then. I was in the media from 1979 to 1983; I started with the radio station, went to NTA where I left as an acting chief presenter in NTA.

Why do women think they can just come in and jump in sometimes? What about mentoring the young ones who would follow when you get up there?
We are talking about forming a data base. Nigerian Women Solidarity is looking into training and we are talking about starting now. If we come together and have workshops, seminars on a regular basis, I wish to impact myself into a million Nigerian women. They become fighters and you can imagine if we all go out, we will get what we want. One thing that is lacking in this country is women recognising their position in this country, their contribution to nation building. We are very important and until we recognise that, we are going nowhere. And that is where Nigerian Women Solidarity is coming in.

Good idea but how do you intend to achieve this?
Well, we want to first of all stabilise Nigerian Women Solidarity. We want to start by bringing in more political women leaders, professional associations and old students associations. We will bring all these women together and start talking from there, they will create the interest and then, you begin to formalise. We also have a micro-finance bank we are looking into that we want to set up. It is called Able Worth Micro Finance bank. We are going to have N25 billion base and with that we can sponsor 12 female governors come 2015 and they will win. They don’t need the money but we need to start working with them from now. There are 774 local governments in Nigeria; a third of it belongs to women.
We have 36 states and six zones. That means in every zone there must be two female governors. We should have 33 female senators and 120 House of Representatives for women in 2015. So if we elementalise it that way, we will be able to use this structure to put things in place. So that is why Nigerian Women Solidarity is coming working with United National Party for Development.

It is commonly believed that women are their own enemies. How do you intend to handle this?
For me, I don’t see any woman as a threat. I believe if I add my strength to your strength, your knowledge to my knowledge, we will be better off. So what you need to be telling people is look for the best in each other. We will source for the best and use it. Everybody has weaknesses, so we will strengthen our weaknesses, create an opportunity to become a threat to the other person and that is it. That is my own SWOT analysis.

What strategies do you think women should put in place so that 2015 election can be carried out effectively?
As I said, Nigerian Women Solidarity is looking into bringing more women together in different professions. If you look at the deputy governors that are in now, they are from the bank. So, we need to bring in all these women, sensitise them and open their eyes to the goodness that is out there waiting for them. A lot of women shy away from trouble, from expected violence. But as I said, if we create our fund, then, there is no need to be afraid. We need to create that funding ourselves; we are not going to be looking out. What I found out presently is that a lot of women are waiting for donor agencies to sponsor them. You don’t expect somebody from outside to come and build your house for you. You need to sow to reap. When we begin to understand that, we begin to implement, we prepare, plan and we proact.

Don’t you think the issue of godfatherism could be a threat?
Not at all, because the money is not coming from anybody, it is coming from our money collectively gathered together. So, there is no issue of godfatherism this time around. So we will source for the best.

Elizabeth Taylor's £100m collection of gems, gowns and art goes on display at Christie's today

The legendary emerald suite was bought by Elizabeth Taylor and husband Richard Burton at jewellers Bulgari while filming Cleopatra in Italy
Elizabeth Taylor was renowned for her impeccable taste for jewellery, and in her lifetime amassed a dazzling collection worth a staggering £20million.
Many of the pieces were designed by Taylor herself in partnership with her favoured jewellery house, Cartier, and many bestowed upon her by her generous husbands.
After her death at age 79 in March, the entire collection of 300 glorious pieces which is given an estimated total value of close to £100m is to go on display at the London auction house Christie's today in a three day exhibition, ahead of a sale of the hoard in New York this December.
Left, the Night of the Iguana Brooch, estimated worth £150,000 to £250,000 ($231,000 to $385,000), and Elizabeth wearing the brooch in 1965. Right, the 33.19 carat Elizabeth Taylor diamond,  said to be potentially internally flawless, is expected to fetch £2.2m ($3.3m), ,far right, Elizabeth wearing the diamond ring

Impressive: Ruby and diamond drop earrings from a suite that included an elaborate necklace, and right, Taylor wearing the earrings with the matching necklace

Many of the stunning gems have great historic value. One, La Pérégrina pearl, is widely considered to be one of the most important pearls in the world. The pear-shaped piece dates from the 16th century, and once belonged to King Phillip II of Spain, and later to his daughters Elizabeth and Margaret.
A total of 269 pieces from her jewellery collection will be auctioned while 400 fashion items spanning over 50 years of Taylor's life will also be sold off.
Highlights from Taylor's art collection, include the 1889 Vincent Van Gogh painting Vue De L'Asile Et De La Chapelle De Saint-Remy, which is expected to fetch up to £7 million and a rare self-portrait by Edgar Degas, with a pre-sale estimate of £450,000.
The trustees of Taylor’s estate have renamed it The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, and it is estimated to fetch between £1.57million and £2.19million.
Firm favourite: The actress wore this beautifully structured metallic dress with leaf detailing back in 1992
Left, The diamond Prince of Wales brooch, made in 1935, has an estimate price of £350,000 to £600,000;  right, pair of diamond and multi-coloured sapphire ball ear clips, with an estimate of £75,000 to £100,00 ($100,000 to150,000)

Charming: A bracelet from the collection features tiny charms in gold, studded with turquoise and ruby - it was a gift from Burton to Taylor, and carries charms bearing the names of both
